FRANZ SCHUBERT DIE ZWILLINGSBRUDER (D 190)
A PAIR OF TWINS Singspiel by Georg Ernst Hofmann
Georg Heckel Petra Labitzke Hubert Schmid Matthias Schaltezky Sonke Morbach
PHILARMONIA MEDITERRANEA SOLISTI CANTORI
Conductor PETER MAAG
Recorded live at the Teatro Rendano, Cosenza, 15-16/11/1997

Schubert's "Way of the Cross to the vain pursuit of the theatre" - as Paumgartner puts it - is made of twenty stations marked by false starts, half successes and bitter failures, and including - but new discoveries may come out at any time - eight works which are roughly sketched or unfinished; five complete Singspieie, while three works of this kind have been entirely or partly lost; a melodrama; incidental music for Rosamunde; and only two 'regular' operas in three acts (Alfonso und Estrella and Fierrabras).
Schubert began to write the score in January 1819 and completed it within three-four months; but the usual show-business conspiracies kept it a long time in wait for its first performance, which eventually took place, with an undecided outcome, on the 14th of June, 1820. Notwithstanding Vogl's great personal success in the double role of the Spiess twin brothers, it only had a run of six nights.
