Suzanne Lefort est née le 10 novembre 1919 à Liévain dans une modeste famille de mineurs. Ses dons pour la musique et pour le chant lui valent d’entrer dès l’âge de 13 ans au conservatoire de Lille. Elle en sort en 1936 avec le premier prix de chant. L’année suivante, elle remporte le concours des Maîtres du chant français à Paris. Jacques Rouché, ébloui par sa voix, lui fait obtenir une bourse qui lui permet de suivre les cours du Conservatoire de Paris. Nantie de trois premiers prix, elle est immédiatement engagée à l’Opéra où elle fait ses débuts 16 novembre 1941 dans le rôle de Dalila. Le public est stupéfait. Cette voix immense ! la Stignani française ! Ce timbre somptueux ! Une Dalila belle, sensuelle, dominatrice avec cette voix dont le mur d’Orange a gardé à jamais l’écho. Et aussi une impériale Amnéris, une terrifiante Margared; et des créations, mais une carrière qui ne s’envole pas : la guerre, l’occupation. Dépression nerveuse. Elle doit quitter l’Opéra ; trop tôt pour avoir droit à la retraite. Elle vit d’expédients. Elle tombe gravement malade. Oubliée de tous et dans le plus grand dénuement, elle meurt le 20 mars 1977.
Pierre Nougaro est né le 27 avril 1904. Brillant élève au Conservatoire de Toulouse, il l’est plus encore au Conservatoire de Paris et dès sa sortie avec ses premiers prix, il est engagé à l’Opéra. Deux, trois petits rôles pour prendre la mesure de la scène, et c’est Rigoletto
où le public, ravi, découvre un vrai baryton-Verdi. Et les grands rôles se succèdent : Athanaël, Amonasro, Valentin, Telramund, Le Grand-Prêtre de Dagon, Hérode, Karnak et surtout ce formidable Iago où il aimait se mesurer au volcanique Luccioni pour le plus grand bonheur du public. A l’Opéra-Comique, il est Zurga, Le Chemineau, Scarpia. Tout en restant attaché au palais Garnier, il aime parcourir la province, de Lille à Marseille, de Nice à Strasbourg,.. la Suisse et la Belgique, où chacune de ses apparitions est en soi un gala. En pleine gloire, il quitte la scène pour diriger leThéâtre de Besançon puis celui de Rennes. A 70 ans passés, il n’en n’a pas fini et devient acteur de cinéma. Son accent rocailleux et sa forte personnalité font merveille.
Eugène Bigot est né à Rennes le 28 février 1888. Au Conservatoire de Paris, il a pour mentors Xavier Leroux, André Gedalge et Paul Vidal. Chef des chœurs, il participe, sous la houlette d’Inghelbrecht, à la saison inaugurale du Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. Mais la guerre éclate. Il la fera avec courage. Démobilisé, il est nommé chef d’orchestre des Ballets Suédois (1920-1923), puis attaché à la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire (1923-1925). Il revient aux Champs-Elysées (1925-1928) puis dirige à la Radio (1928-1934). Après une saison à Monte-Carlo, il devient président-chef d’orchestre des Concerts Lamoureux où son action sera déterminante dans le développement de l’œuvre accomplie par son illustre prédécesseur, Albert Wolff (1935-1951). Parallèlement, il est premier chef d’orchestre à l’Opéra-Comique (1936-1947). Il participe à la création de l’orchestre radio-symphonique en 1947 et en restera chef permanent jusqu’à sa mort à Paris, le 17 juillet 1965. Doté de l’oreille absolue, c’était un extraordinaire déchiffreur. A ce titre, il a beaucoup fait pour révéler la musique de son temps à un public qu’il savait fidéliser. Très précis mais sachant respirer avec ceux et celles qu’il accompagnait, il était très apprécié par les maisons de disques qui lui ont confié quantité de récitals de chanteurs.
Suzanne Lefort was born on the 10th November 1919 at Lievain, to a miner’s family of modest means. Her musical and vocal gifts won her a place at the Lille conservatoire. She graduated in 1930 with the first prize in singing. the following year she carried off the prize in the Master’s compettiton of French singing in Paris. Jacques Rouche, overwhelmed by her voice, obtained a scholarship to enable her to follow courses at the Paris conservatoire. rewarded with three first prizes, she was immediately engaged at the Opera where she made her debut on 16 November 1941 in the role of Delilah. Dubbing her the french Stignani. She was a beautiful, sensual and dominating Dlelilah whose voice still echoes from the walls of Orange. She was also an imperious Amneris, a terrifying Margared as well as creating new roles, but her career failed to take off as a result of the war and the occupation. Shocked and depressed, she had to leave the Opera, too early to receive a pension. She lived through hard times and fell seriously ill. she dieds forgotten by all and in the greatest poverty on 20 March 1977.
Pierre Nougaro was born on the 28 April 1904. A brilliant pupil at theToulouse Conservatoire and later at the Paris Conservatoire, he graduated with the highest prized and was engaged by the Opera. After two or three small roles to get the measure of the stage, he took on Rigoletto and the delighted public discovered a true Verdi baritone. The great roles followed one another; Athanael, Amonasro, Valentin, telramund, the High Priest of Dagon, Herod, Karnak and above all his awesome Iago, in which role he loved to measure himself against the volcanic Luccioni to thegreat pleasure of the public. At the Opera-Comique he undertook Zurga, Le Chemineau, Scarpia. While remaining attached to the Palais Garnier he enjoyed touring the provinces from Lille to Marseilles and from Nice to Strasbourg.. as well as in Swizterland and Belgium where his every appearance became a gala. At the height of his powers, he retired from the stage in order to direct the Theatre at Besancon and then that of Rennes. At over 70 years old, he had still not finished and became a film actor, producing a marvelous effect with his earthy accent and strong personality.

After demobilisation he was appointed conductor of the Ballets Suedois (1920-1923) and attached to the Societe des Concerts du Conservatoire (1923-25) He returned to the Champs-Elysees (1925-1928) and then conducted for the radio (1928-1934) After a season at Monte carlo, he became chief conductor of the Orchestre des Concerts Lamoureux where he was able to build on the work of his illustrious predecessor Albert Wolff (1935-1951) At the same time he was chief conductor at the Opera-Comique (1936-1947) He participated in the creation of the Orchestre Radio-symphonique in 1947 and remained its permament conductor until his death in Paris on 17 July 1965. He was gifted with perfect pitch and an extraordinary ability as a sight reader. He did much to reveal the music of his time to a public of which he was able to retain the devotion. Very precise but also knowing how to breathe with those he accompanied, he was much appreciated by record companies who entrusted him with large numbers of vocal recitals.
